If you view the sky from the southern hemisphere, no doubt would have gazed at the two magnificent zodiacal constellations of Scorpius the Scorpion and Sagittarius the Archer. These two constellations are rich with faint stars, clusters, and misty patches of nebulae, vast glowing patches of gas and dust illuminated by hot young stars embedded in their web like labyrinth. But why are these two constellations crowded with stars while the Plough has very few? The answer lies in the direction we are looking with regards to our galaxy, the Milky Way.
When we look towards Scorpius and Sagittarius we are looking towards the heart of our galaxy where the densest concentration of stars, gas and dust occurs. Naturally, this line of sight effect means that we see many stellar objects bunched together and hence the richness of this part of the sky. The Plough on the other hand lies well away from the centre of the galaxy and so is devoid of the fuzzy misty light we call the Milky Way best seen well away from the sodium light pollution of town and city lights.
